Baptism
We believe that baptism is the free gift of forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit offered to us all through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Baptism is the way that we are made children of God and citizens of God’s Kingdom. We believe that this gift is for infants, children and adults (Acts 2:38-39). If you would like more information on baptism, feel free to speak with one of our pastors.
A Biblical perspective on Baptism
What a great joy when we get to receive new members of all ages into the body of Christ! Baptism is a wonderful time when, through water and the Word of God, the Lord claims us as His own sons and daughters. We know that through faith and baptism God claims us as His own as we read in Acts 2:38 “Repent and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Jesus said it this way: “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Likewise, He commanded us to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19), and Jesus has promised “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16a).
Baptism, then, is one of the ways by which God confers His grace on us, giving us His mercy earned by Christ at the cross and the grave. Therefore, baptism is for all people and all ages. Parents bring their sons and daughters to be baptized, trusting and believing in God’s promise of forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit for their children. Adults who were not baptized as children come to be baptized to receive the same assurance.
From this biblical foundation, Gloria Dei has established a policy for baptisms. We are blessed as a congregation to have a large number of infants and children baptized every year, and a good number of adults. In order for us to gracefully accommodate these baptisms, please review the policy below.
