Matthew 9

Today we are reading Matthew 9. In this chapter we read about Jesus’ early ministry and the Calling of Matthew. As He returned across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, a few men brought their crippled friend to Jesus. “And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” —he then said to the paralytic— “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.” Matthew‬ ‭9:1-8‬ ‭ESV‬‬ This same story is told in Mark 2 where we learn that this man’s friends were so desperate to see their friend healed that they tore a hole in the roof above where Jesus was teaching and lowered their friend down. Jesus knows this but instead of healing him first He forgives his sins. Jesus has the priorities straight. Forgiveness from God is far more important than a temporary healing. Put yourself in the position of the man’s friends. How desperate are you for your friends and family members to come to know Jesus? What are you willing to do to make that happen? May God bless you to be a bold and courageous witness for Jesus! Pastor Tim
