Today we are reading Mark 12. In this chapter we read about the religious leaders trying to trap Jesus in His words. The keyword for this chapter is “hu-ster-ay-sis”. The definition is “deficiency, want, need”. “And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”” Mark 12:41-44 ESV The idea is that this poor widow gave as an offering the few meager coins that she needed to sustain her life. Her poverty was so great that her life was hanging on by a thread. Have you ever felt desperately poor? What kind of concerns did your poverty bring out? This story proves that Jesus know our financial picture. The reality, however, is that Jesus doesn’t need our money to take care of us. In our poverty He shows Himself to be rich and generous. How did your poverty teach you to trust in Jesus? May God bless you to see His abundant mercy and providence. Pastor Tim
