Today we are reading Luke 9. In this chapter we read about Jesus in His final weeks of ministry before His Passion. “When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village.” Luke 9:51-56 ESV When I read this passage I am always intrigued by the expression, “he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” What does this mean? Did He have a particular look on His face? Did He make His travel plans clear? For Jesus it meant that this particular village was not His destination—just a brief stop to rest. Like when you are on a long drive and you stop for gas. Maybe the Samaritans were hurt or disappointed that He was not going to stay and teach. Maybe they thought it was just another slight from the Jews towards the Samaritans. At any rate, Jesus’ plan and purpose was ultimately best for all people—including Jews and Samaritans—because His plan meant salvation for all who believe. What is your plan for today? Who will your plan benefit? Pastor Tim
