John 2

Today we are reading John 2. In this chapter we read about Jesus changing the water into wine and the time when chased the money-changers from the Temple. “Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”” John‬ ‭2:6-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬
In this story there are several interesting twists. First, the jars and water were used by Jews for ceremonial purification. Second, for a family to run out of wine at a wedding feast was a great public embarrassment. Third, “best for lasts” is a reversal of conventional practice where the best is only give to the most important guests. A possible application of this miracle is the comparison with communion. In the Lord’s Supper, Jesus changes wine into His blood and bread into His body. The body and blood are present in, with and under the bread and the wine.  In the Lord’s Supper, Jesus takes away the shame and guilt of our sin. And finally, in the Lord’s Supper, the best is given to all. May God bless you and keep you in His loving care! Pastor Tim
