Today we are reading 1 Samuel 8. In this chapter we read about Israel rejecting Samuel and demanding a king. “Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.”
1 Samuel 8:4-7 ESV Wanting to be like all the other nations was a pitfall for Israel. All the other nations were completely reliant on a strong human leader to defend them and rule them. The people of Israel admired these pagan people and wanted to have a king too. In the process, they have put their faith in the king idea instead of God. What have we put our faith in that is not God? There are no exceptions to the first commandment. God bless you and keep you! Pastor Tim
