Today we are reading 1 Samuel 1. The Book of 1 Samuel was dates from around 970 BC and tells the story of the beginning of the monarchy of Israel. In this first chapter we learn the story of the birth of the prophet Samuel. (1 & 2 Samuel were originally work divided into two scrolls). God gave Hannah a child after many years being barren. With great gratitude she gave him to Gods to serve in His Temple in Shiloh. “And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:26-28 ESV So, Hannah, in her anxiety, calls out to God. She very humbly makes her request for a son. God blesses her with a son and she gives him, as a three year-old, to a life of service to the Lord. Little Samuel becomes the great prophet, priest and king-maker. He will later anoint Saul and David to rule over Israel. How does this unusual story speak to your situation? How has God answered your fervent prayers? When has your humble approach to God guided you to blessings? May God bless you especially with the things that trouble you. Pastor Tim
