Today we are reading 1 Kings 4. In this chapter we read about Solomon’s administration, peace, prosperity and wisdom. “Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the sea. They ate and drank and were happy. Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life. And Judah and Israel lived in safety, from Dan even to Beersheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon. And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt.” 1 Kings 4:20-21, 25, 29-30 ESV Which aspect of Solomon’s reign is most intriguing to you? I am fascinated by his “breadth of mind”. It seems Solomon was an expert on every subject. This fact seems wonderful but imagine if you could not find anyone who is your intellectual equal. Who would you ask for help? How might Solomon’s wisdom be a downfall for him? How can you avoid letting your wisdom hinder you? May God give the discernment needed to hold your wisdom in check.
