Today we are reading 1 Corinthians 8. In this chapter we read about how our choices affect others. “Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.”
1 Corinthians 8:8-13 ESV Have you ever been disappointed by the behavior of someone you looked up to? I remember having that experience when I first began to study to be a pastor. There was an older student who I looked up to because of his knowledge of the Bible. One night he came into our dorm after having had too much to drink. I was very disappointed. Now it’s true that my faith should rest solely in Jesus but I was young and still able to be discouraged. How can we be careful not to harm those who are new in the faith? May God remind you of your influence on those around you. Pastor Tim
